Julio

“Santo cielo . . . is every Chilean in the country coming to this house to celebrate el dieciocho?”

“Hector, don’t exaggerate,” said Julio’s mother. “We have a few extra guests this year, so we’re making a little extra.”

Julio surveyed the kitchen island, which was filled from corner to corner with food in various stages of preparation. He eyed his mother skeptically. “I’m with Papá on this one. This is not a little extra food. Who are all these extra guests?”

“Your friend Ace is coming with his wife.” His mother narrowed her eyes. “You invited them, yes?”

“Yes, Mamá.”

“And, your aunt Lucía will be here.”

“That’s three new people. You’re making enough food for a hundred.”

She shrugged. “Well, you never know who else might show up.” She looked at him with a smile.

Julio felt suddenly nervous. Did she know about Olivia?

He had purposely waited until the last minute to tell his family about his new “girlfriend,” partly because he still had some lingering misgivings about his plan, and partly because he had to time the bombshell just right in order to minimize the aftershocks. If he told them just before they met her, there would be less time for hysterics, nosy questions, and wild speculation.

His mother, however, was a champion at finding out hidden information. There was always a chance she was two steps ahead of him.

He watched her carefully as she chopped some vegetables on the kitchen counter. She showed no sign of concealing any epic secrets.

She looked up at him. “I need you to help, not stand around. Did you sweep the living room like I asked?”

“Yes, I did.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Corners, too?”

Julio’s father groaned. “Ay, Elena, leave him alone. You’re talking to him like he’s a little boy.”

She swung around to face Julio’s father and waved the knife she was holding in his general direction. “Don’t tell me how to talk to my son. He never gets the corners. I don’t like the house to look like a disaster. Especially not when we have . . . company.”

“Family isn’t ‘company,’” said Julio. “You think Tía Lucía cares how the house looks? She never notices things like dust in corners.”

His mother went back to chopping, more assertively this time. “Well, she should.”

His father walked over to her and gently tucked a stray lock of her hair behind her ear. Then he picked up one of her hands.

“Ay, no, my fingers are dirty,” she said.

Smiling, he looked right into her eyes. “I don’t care.”

Giggling, she blushed and dropped her gaze. He kissed her hand slowly, then said, “This is a holiday. Let’s enjoy it, and each other.” He wiggled his eyebrows. She laughed and swatted him gently on the shoulder with her free hand.

“You guys are like teenagers,” said Julio. “Aren’t you supposed to be tired of each other by now?”

His father’s eyebrows lifted. “Tired of someone this beautiful?” he said.

His mother giggled again. “Life with your father is never dull.”

Julio ducked quickly into the living room, broom in hand, just as they began kissing.
